Moderation Between the Two Extremes of Miserliness (taqtir) and Wastefulness (tabdhir)

Imam Ibn Qudamah al-Maqdisi [d.689H] mentions in his Mukhtaasar Minhaj al-Qasidin…

“What also indicates that he intent of disciplining [the soul] is moderation in the fact that generosity (sikha) is is a trait which is sought-after in the Devine Legislation (shar‘) and it’s middle point between the two extremes of miserliness (taqtir) and wastefulness (tabdhir). Allah has praised this moderation by saying,

“And [they are] those who, when they spend, do so not excessively or sparingly but are ever, between that, [justly] moderate”

Chapter (25) sūrat l-fur’qān (The Criterion)(25:67)

Hence Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى‎ also mentions in His Noble Book…

“And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck or extend it completely and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent.”
Chapter (17) sūrat l-isrā (The Night Journey)(17:29)

Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Every day two angels come down from Heaven and one of them says, ‘O Allah! Compensate every person who spends in Your Cause,’ and the other (angel) says, ‘O Allah! Destroy every miser.’ ”

Sahih al-Bukhari 1442

Warrad, the scribe of al-Mughira ibn Shu’ba, said, “Mu’awiya wrote to al-Mughira ibn Shu’ba, saying, ‘Write down for me something which you heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.’ Al-Mughira wrote to him, ‘ The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to forbid gossip, wasting money, asking too many questions, refusing to give, disobedience to parents, and burying daughters alive.”

Ibn ‘Abbas said that he said that “the squanderers” were those who wasted money incorrectly.
